Though her actions are understandable, she is viewed as rebelling since she broke the law. It is a surprise for everyone to find out that it is a woman, not any woman but a princess who defies the laws. On first finding out about the burial of Antigones brother, Polynices, Creon demands from the sentry to find him, the sinner, And bring him here into my sight (Antigone, Exodus 344). To everyones astonishment, it is not a he but a she. Creon punishes Antigone for her crime of burying her brother by imprisoning her in a cave as she awaits her punishment of being stoned. In the cave, Antigone decides to take her own life before being stoned. Antigones second rebellious act is her suicide. Antigones suicide maybe an expected act for the audience but it is still rebellious. We saw her hanging by the neck (Antigone, Exodus 1220). Antigone hangs herself in the cave that she is imprisoned in before Creon can tell her that she will not be punished. Antigones act is one that shocks each person because she took matters into her own hands and took her own life rather than being stoned. By hanging herself, Antigone shows that she accepts her fate and does not deny death. Unlike most women in Thebes, Antigone did not care about what the laws were and did what she believed is to be right; she did not want the approval of men before taking action.

The Truman Show is not only famous because it is a typical 20th century movie, it also includes one of the todays best actors. Jim Carrey , Ed Harris , and Laura Linney are only three of many actors of this movie who performance their role in a perfect way. Also the strange storyline makes the movie to special in its genre. The storyline is deceptive, almost maliciously so (Myers 1), and is based on several movies like Edtv (1999), which is also about a man whose life is broadcast li ve 24 hours a day on television, he plays a similar character (IMDB 2). It is also very famous because it contains never before seen technical aspects like the directors office of the TV show. The many camera shots from every position, like garbage cans, behind car radios, and billboards, make it very individual. Truman Burbank, played by Jim Carrey, is living in a suburban setting and works as a salesman. He doesnt realize that he is living in a fake world with actors all around him. His lifestyle is like an ordinary Joe whose life seems to be pretty idyllic. He has a good job, a nice house, and a beautiful wife (Jardine 1); he goes to work everyday and is totally satisfied with his life. Only one day, when he his on his way to work, a camera light, from the film producers falls down from the sky and lands close to him. He picks it up, but doesnt really think about it. In the car, after hitting the radio because it is not working properly, he can hear directions about where he is going coming out of his speakers. The last strange and most important scene is when he recognizes his father, who was purposely drowned while sailing with Truman, on the street. When Truman recognizes him, his father is taken away by some mysterious, casually dressed men. He begins wondering what is wrong with him or his world. After watching his environment with more attention, he realizes that everything is repeated over and over. For example he sees a yellow bug, a man with flowers, and a woman on a bicycle is passing his house every ten minutes. Something is missing [in his life], and he thinks perhaps he might find it in Fiji, where Lauren (Natascha McElhone), the only woman he really lo ved, allegedly has moved with her family (Ebert 1). However he cant take a boat because he always remembers the day when he lost his father. The TV show director also indirectly doesnt allow him to escape, because it would ruin the TV show. When Truman is sleeping and the producers of the TV show dont pay attention, Truman is finally able to escape with a boat by himself. Christof, the director, tries everything to stop him, before can escape from the set. After Truman almost drowned in a manufactures heavy thunderstorm, Truman reaches the edge of the set and tries to walk out. That is the first scene in which Christof and Truman have their first conversation. Christof tries to keep Truman from leaving the film set arguing argues, that he has created him and the world he has created for [Truman] is the good world, not the sick world [outside of the set] (The Truman Show). However, Truman decides to step out of the set and says the sentence he always said to his neighbors every morning; Good morning! And in case I dont see you: good af ternoon, good evening and good night! (The Truman Show). After that you can only see Trumans back as he steps into a black background and Christof shutting down his little desktop, through which he watched Truman talking to him. The directing by Peter Weir plays a big role in making The Truman Show a terrific movie. He selected several actors who were not very typical for their role. Truman, played by Jim Carey, who might simultaneously break your heart as easily as he makes you laugh (Turan 1) was not expected to present this role that perfect. Also Cristof (Ed Harris), who won the Golden Globe as Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (HFPA 1), and Hanna Gill (Laura Linney), who was nominated for Favorite Supporting Actress Drama by the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards (Blockbuster 1), make this movie to a highlight in his genre. English Literature Essays Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing Explore the different types of love presented in Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing, considering how our views of love differ from those of an Elizabethan audience. Love is a common theme in Shakespeares comedies, with the action of the play often following a similar pattern: love is declared, is challenged in some way and is finally reasserted in the act of marriage. Much Ado About Nothing is no exception and presents this plot structure through the pairings of Claudio and Hero, and Benedick and Beatrice. These couples illustrate two different types of love, and their portrayed experiences are revealing of Elizabethan attitudes and beliefs regarding love. Claudio and Hero provide us with an example of a swiftly progressing love which culminates in marriage little more than a few weeks after they have first met. For an Elizabethan audience the concept of love at first sight would have been widely regarded as a valid possibility in life. The speed with which the two young characters move from strangers to husband and wife allows Shakespeare to present the courting process within the society of nobility. Such a rapid progression is commented on by Claudio as he explains his newfound love I would have salvd it with a longer treatise (I.i.289). However, it seems that once the first pangs of love occur, the action moves onto the next stage in the process. There are many rules and regulations when it comes to expressing love for another. This can be seen in Claudios consequent actions; rather than approach Hero himself, it is preferable for his friend to woo her on his behalf, in the words of Don Pedro, I will break with her and with her fa ther (I.i.283). In todays society the procedure of asking permission from the father of a prospective wife is often seen as old-fashioned and is nowhere near as common a practice as in Shakespeares day. Through speech an Elizabethan nobleman would be expected to demonstrate intelligence and wit with the impression of spontaneity. In the same way, when attracting a woman he would be expected to impress with lavish and clever language. Much importance is placed on the language of love expected from a suitor within the play. Shakespeares narration reflects the qualities of such language by switching from prose to iambic pentameter, a rhythmical form more fitting for descriptions of love. Don Pedro reminds Claudio of the power of a lovers words as they discuss his intentions towards Hero, Thou wilt be like a lover presently, / And tire the hearer with a book of words (I.i.280-1). As a young, inexperienced man, Claudio clearly needs the help of his friend and is naturally grateful to have gained an ally in his endeavours. Don Pedros role in the relationship of Claudio and Hero brings attention to the importance placed on the intervention of a third person. Again, this is a practice not p articularly common in modern society, at least not with any successful results. Benedick and Beatrices relationship differs from that of Claudio and Hero in the history the two have between them. There is a reference to a previous courtship in which Beatrice feels she was treated badly. This history between them results in the portrayal of a more mature relationship and a love that is formed through similarities in characters and mutual beliefs. Before the two characters fall in love they share the attitude of adversity towards the idea of marriage and falling in love, Beatrice claims that she would rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me'(I.i.107-108). As a result they are constantly rebuked and made fun of for holding such a low opinion of marriage. The reaction of other characters towards the two cynics suggests that marriage is the ultimate symbol of love and should be the goal to which all aspire to, a belief that is reinforced when Benedick and Beatrice are eventually proved wrong and succumb to the powers of love themselves. In Shak espeares time marriage would have been the only way for women to better themselves financially and socially. Men would also have gained status by marrying and thus providing heirs to any property and wealth. With this in mind, there seems less emphasis on the love aspect of marriage than the idealistic impressions of marriage in the play would have us believe. To return to the relation of Shakespeares portrayal of love to a modern society, marriage as a representation of love no longer has such significance, with equal respect given to single and married individuals. The power of Cupid is frequently referred to in relation to both couples. This power is often transferred to a third party that intervenes to aid the progression of love. Don Pedro is at the forefront of this matchmaking when he decides to bring together Benedick and Beatrice, If we can do this, Cupid is no longer an archer; his glory shall be ours, for we are the only love-gods (II.i.355-357). By tricking each character with lies about the other, they are manipulated into falling in love. Far from the natural concept of falling in love uncontrollably, Don Pedro and Hero command the feelings of Benedick and Beatrice through created scenarios. It is the power of calculated words that actually take effect, as noted by Hero as she discusses the plot with Ursula, Of this matter / Is Cupids crafty arrow made, / That only wounds by hearsay (III.i.21-23). This level of secrecy seems characteristic of court society at the time, a level of intervention which ultimately helps or hinders. The reactions and descriptions of people in love within the play suggest a darker side of love, often characterised by physical symptoms. For example, Hero collapses at the very thought of being accused of infidelity. Also, Don Pedro and Hero both refer to the supposed noticeable difference in appearance of their lovesick friends. On proposing not to tell Beatrice of Benedicks love for her, she concludes that he will consume away in sighs, waste inwardly (III.i.78). Strangely, Benedick and Beatrice seem drawn to the idea of the other suffering from the pain of an unrequited love. The image of Benedick wasting away clearly has a powerful impression on Beatrice who almost immediately falls in love with him. Having overheard talk of Benedicks anguish (as well as his excellent qualities as a gentleman and soldier) she begins to think of marriage, To bind our loves up in a holy band (III.i.114). She also mentions the taming of her wild heart (III.i.112) as a result of Benedicks love, a ph rase that brings to mind the later play of The Taming of the Shrew. In both plays, it seems that the love of a man is able to tame an outspoken shrewish character, a belief that many in an Elizabethan audience would have shared. Much Ado About Nothing presents us with two pairings of lover that demonstrate two different experiences of love, both governed by societal codes of conduct that no longer have significance in modern society. In contrast, Claudio and Hero show a speedy, formal process of courting, while Benedick and Beatrice represent a more drawn out, resisting relationship. While both couplings suffer the consequences of intervention of others, the latter marry purely as a result of meddling friends. It seems that love in the play is concerned more with superficial appearances and falsely created scenarios than actual feelings. Views of love in the play clearly differ from modern day opinion, but this is not to say that we cannot relate to the play because we are not part of an Elizabethan audience; our codes of conduct in dating and matchmaking have merely evolved to suit todays society. Live for Today Tomorrow, the day after today. It is an indefinite time in the future. One question many people have on their minds is, what does tomorrow hold in store for me? Could I say I finished everything I started, or did I accomplish everything that I always wanted to do, but never did for fear of it being too risky? No one should feel they did not take the high road in order to enable them to fulfill that one great adventure. Life is full of ups and downs; it could be described as a huge pot of gold with a few dingy stones mixed together. The dingy stones are the few misfortunes one may come across; the gold is what everyone wants, and hopefully attains. To achieve anything, one must take risks and not ask questions regarding tomorrow. I, like many others, could choose to look into a clear, crystal ball and see what the future holds. Instead I decide to look away and be adventurous. This way I get to have the exciting feeling of not knowing what is behind door number three or four. Yes, it is a scary feeling, but also one of hope. Life Experience I had played on the volleyball team all through my junior high days, and was a starter on the â€Å"A† freshman team when I reached high school. As a sophomore, I couldn’t believe it when I got the towel thrown in on me. I was devastated when I was cut from the team. Volleyball was my life; I absolutely loved the sport. How could they do this to me? Everyone told me things would turn out fine, but how did they know? A close friend of mine wrote me a letter stating, â€Å"I know that right now it is hard to accept the paths that God has chosen for us, but I am sure whatever you decide to do with what has been thrown in your way you can surpass everyone else†. I thought about what that really meant, and decided she was right. I had been thrown something I was not sure what to do with or how to handle, but with a little advice from my brother, Chris, I decided to take a risk and try something new. I chose to become a member of our school’s cross-country team.

The insistence seems impossible to resist, like a constant drum beat inside the soldiers minds making the soldiers feel like they have no alternative but to go to war. Dulce et Decorum est has an accusatory tone; this tone is directed mockingly at my friend, particularly in the last stanza. The poets anger builds and the use of the direct and accusatory tone excels. The poet gives his description impact by speaking in the present tense guttering, choking, drowning, this gives a sense of immediacy and desperate warning to the soldiers to believe the happy stories of war. The language in Whos for the game? is crude as the poet has never before experienced war: she creates a false image to young, nai ve boys of what war might be like. The poet has a target audience of young men similar to Wilfred Owens poem though he tries to put across to true image of war. Wilfred Owen uses powerful imagery to describe the horror of the war, guttering, giving images of a candle about to flicker out. He uses the image of a devil like a devils sick of sin; the soldiers are sick of sin but ironically devils should never be sick of sin. Similes used near the beginning of the poem such as bent double like old beggars under sacks suggest that the soldiers are now on the fringes of society. In theory the soldiers should be young and brave, but Owen reduces them to old, forgotten about hags. In Whos for the game? Pope uses an enthralling rugby game to describe the war, to her readers. This quite contradicts Owens views that war has made the soldiers old like hags. The two poems have quite different messages. Whos for the game? has a clear propaganda message as it tricks young, nai ve men into thinking war is something its not, whereas Wilfred Owen has a definite anti-war message, conveying the truth to men and soldiers that have been in, or are considering going to war. The town poems are very different in their form. Jesse Pope uses a very regular rhyme and rhythm: a strong beat is felt particularly at the end of each line, emphasising the patronising question words to the soldiers. The last beat falls at the end of the last stanza on you as if the poet is physically pointing their finger at the juvenile solider or reader. This is very personal and direct. In contrast to this simple poem, Wilfred Owens is quite complex. It does have rhyme such as sacks and backs though in between lines 1 and 3, is sludge, slowing the poem right down, these awkward sounding consonants conveying an onomatopoeia effect. In the second stanza lines 1 and 3, and 2 and 4 rhyme, though 5 and 6 dont creating struggle as the poem doesnt flow, again emphasising the struggle and nightmares of the soldiers that are intruding on the present. Both poems had a very strong and powerful though different impact on the reader. In Whos for the game? we feel angry and frustrated at Jesse Pope for giving the soldiers a false illusion of what war was. Being young and nai ve the young men still look for guidance and this sort of poetry we feel is unethical. In comparison, Dulce et De Corum Est makes us feel encouraged that someone was fighting for the truth to be told. The fact that the soldiers were only young and nai ve was clearly recognised and emphasised: children ardent for some desperate glory Wilfred Owen had the true picture of how wrong Jesse Pope was to spread poems full of lies. However, the reader does finish the poem feeling proud that young soldiers were prepared to fight for our country until they were no longer able. Disabled by Wilfred Owen is an anti-war poem, describing in much detail the story of a naive, young man going into war to impress, unaware of the full detail of what he was signing up to, in fact throwing away his life. Does it matter by Siegfried Sassoon, similarly, this is an anti-war poem putting across his views in a very patronising manor making his strong anger against war very clear. Where the poem Disabled is a sad, detailed story, Does it matter? is an angry, but simple poem, filled with sarcasm. Where disabled subtlety portrays the anti-war feeling of the poet, Does is matter? is again anti-war, but filled with the poets anger and fury. Disabled uses heavy, detailed description to gain the audiences attention, though Does it matter? uses simple language in good writing techniques such as the use of clichi s and sarcasm in order to entertain and again get the audience listening. Both poets have a clear anti-war message, and both seem strongly against Jesse Pope, who wrongly, wrote poems about a war which she had never experienced poets such as Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, along with many others, aimed to convince the public that wars were far from sweet and decorous. The mood of Disabled reaches for the sadness and pity of the audience by going into great depth about a young soldier, where Does it matter wastes no time in unmistakably putting across his outrage of trying to trick young, nai ve soldiers to the reader. The poem Disabled changes the tense of the poem frequently, alternating from present to past to future, giving the reader full knowledge of the exciting history, sad situation the young man is in, and what destroyed future the man has ahead of him. He is described presently as legless, sewn short at elbow as if he is now not a whole human, not a real man. Ironically, he was legless when signing up for the war: when hed drunk a peg, He thought hed better join, and on completing the job, he is now permanently disabled, and has lost the admiration he once had for signing up to go to war, before he threw away his knees it ironically seems he intended to through them away, though now he is lonely and in self-pity as he has no legs and foreshortened arms. The young man feels destroyed by the loss of his limbs, the young man that were whole ironically, he feels emasculated due to him loosing his limbs. He will no longer never feel again how slim girls waists are, or how warm their subtle hands; it seems he was extremely nai ve into what he was actually signing up to, which was in fact throwing away his youth and even life. Its almost a lifetime ago, as war has matured him so much, from the quote and that he had a girlfriend his Meg it would seem he was popular with the ladies. This would probably be due to his extremely good looks, there was an artist silly for his face it would now be such a contrast, as all the colour and excitement has drained out of his life, shivered in his ghastly suit of grey, his life has gone from colour quickly to black and white. It would seem ironic, that he signed up to war to impress the girls, though now he is touched like some queer disease by girls, he wanted to impress though he is now only being repulsed at and some are even quite afraid of him. On going to receive admiration, pity they may dole he receives none, only little pity. The young man was tricked into war by people such as Jesse Pope, and it can be easily understood from this why poets such as Siegfried Sassoon wrote with such power, and anger not holding back as they wanted the soldiers to know the real truth. Does it matter? loosing your legs? it seems for the young man in Disabled it did considerably, ruined his life in fact. For people will always be kind Sassoon writes, we have learnt that this is definitely not always the case, as the man from war was felt he was touched like some queer disease even though the simple reason he was in that state was due to him fighting for their country, putting his life on the line. He is described presently as waiting for dark as if there is nothing to do but simply wait for death, drowned in his own sadness and blood, a leap of purple spurted from his thigh when to impress was what he signed up for, what he received is so mething unimaginably different. The insensitiveness and greed of the people left at home is more clearly shown in Does it matter: need not show that you mind others come in after hunting, to gobble their muffins and eggs there is a sense of ignorance and lack of sympathy to the injured coming back from war. When ironically, if the soldiers hadnt of gone, the whole country may have been at risk, and the ones left at home would be unable to go hunting and gobble their muffins and eggs. The poem Disabled ends with repetition on the end of the last two lines, Why dont they come? Why dont they come? Calling out and emphasising to the reader the desperate situation the soldiers have landed themselves into. There is no longer anyone there for him, no one to look at him. This once more, all agrees with Siegfried Sassoons poem Does it matter and people wont say that your mad his strong sarcasm has backed up evidence after reading the story of Disabled. Sassoon writes mockingly at what comfort may be given theres such splendid work for the blind this is platitude, trying to make someone feel better, when really it is simply an empty comfort as how could that make up for losing your sight. Does it matter? also disdains the poem Dulce et Decorum est: Do they matter? those dreams from the pit? for the soldiers being described in this poem their sleep is far from dreams, its nightmares, phantasmagorical, re-living the times of the pit, as they are intruding on the soldiers present lives: before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning having a horrific impact on the soldiers lives. Both poems have a clear anti-war message, though where Sassoons has writes in a youthful idealistic way about war, Owen writes in a very satirical manor though has a serious moral purpose underneath with many other feelings and emotions attached such as bitterness and anger, disillusioning the reader. Where, the young man in disabled is a clear victim of Jesse Popes propaganda Told it was like a game, similar to her poem Whos for the game the young man thought it would be like football, and the injuries were good, a blood smear down his leg carried shoulder-high, it was after football though war is no comparison to a game of football or even rugby as it was likened to by Jesse Pope the young man was robbed of his disillusions. The poem Disabled has regular rhyming; each stanza has a different pace creating different moods for the reader. For example stanza 4 has is quick paced showing the excitement in the young mans life before he went to war: someone said hed look a God in kilts, thats why; he may be, too, to please his Meg; his life was so exhilarating and fast. This then contrasts to the present and future tense stanzas which are slow and dont flow easily for the reader, particularly the last stanza which has no rhyming, this is difficult for the reader to read similar to what a difficult life the young man now leads. Similarly the poem does it matter has a very regular rhyming pattern, lines 1 and 5, 2 and 3 rhyme, the forth line always not. This creates what could seem a very simple poem for the reader to read, though it has a very complex meaning inside quite different to disabled, where most of the poets opinions are detailed, and on the surface. Adding to this, the consistent repetition of Does it matter? at the beginning of each stanza brings obvious sarcasm, and the true effects of war on the soldiers. From reading and analysing these poems I have become open minded about my view of the different poets forms of writing. At first I was extremely against the crude way of writing that Jesse Pope did, though I now release that if the truth had been revealed all along, there is a possibility no one would of wanted to fight and our country would have been quite different from what it is today. I thought the propaganda poetry, especially Wilfred Owens Disabled was particularly emotional as the situation can still be related to today.

Slaves in America had no freedom and were subject to the whims and demands of their masters. The Louisiana code stated that "A slave could not make contracts, own property, or form legal partnerships on his or her own" (Oakes xiv). Family relationships among slaves were not honored and as a result, there were no requirements that slave owners keep families intact. In fact, many times, children were taken from mothers and sold as soon as they were strong enough to work themselves. Husbands and fathers were sold without regard to the feelings of wives or children. The people who were most against slavery were those who were involved in organized religion. Quakers believed in ending slavery one slaveholder at a time. They sent letters, wrote to newspapers, authored pamphlets and almanacs, using any form of publication they could to decry the institution of slavery and encourage slave owners to free their slaves. Quakers outlined a method through which slaveholders would "first educate slaves in reading and writing, teach them the principles of truth and righteousness, teach them a trade, and then set them free" (Brown 6). While it cannot be argued that the Quakers, or Society of Friends, played a crucial role in the anti-slavery movement, in all likelihood the movement would have gone on and would have been successful without their influence. There were many people in antebellum America who were willing to make great personal sacrifices to see that there was eventual freedom for all Americans. These people spanned the races, religions and cultures of the time and were dedicated to the idea of freedom for all. Body The Quakers brought up the inappropriateness of slavery in the 1600s, thus bringing the issue to the forefront of many political and social debates. They began work against slavery and did not stop their work until the e nd of slavery in America. One distinct advantage that the Quakers had in their anti-slavery work was that they had an already established network of people willing to assist runaway slaves and those who had already been freed. Friends could meet in large, public groups to make plans regarding their abolitionist activities without fear of raising suspicion because that is what they had been doing prior to their involvement in the Underground Railroad and other abolitionist activities. Additionally, the Quakers involved in anti-slavery activities knew that they could trust their fellow Friends with their lives, which is what was at stake when they assisted runaway slaves to freedom. Before slaves began to receive help from Quakers, or anyone else, in their resistance movement, they had devised many ways to confront slavery. They discovered that violence was rarely a very successful method of resistance, as the slaveholders responded immediately and intensely. Instead, they used more s ubtle methods of resistance such as "work slowdowns, feigning illness, breaking tools, and sabotaging equipment under the guise of clumsiness" (Horton and Horton 120). Slaves also used song to fight slavery.
