Argumentative Essay on Male Role Changes During Last 20 Years

In What Way Has Traditional Male Roles Changed Nowadays? We must admit that every little boy dreams to become an adult ASAP so as to be a true man. Time flies by and this guy is far not a teenager any more, but has he reached his original goal? Male and female roles are changing dramatically in the modern society and that’s the fact. Women are extending their influence in all the spheres of life. They are active and influential politicians, successful businesswomen, brave astronauts and wise doctors. Women build career and take care of their families, spend the whole eternity in beauty salons and make astonishing achievements in science. Their energy has no limits, it seems. The only question which appears at this point is, naturally, where are the men? Please, understand me correctly, that’s wonderful that our careful men give women a chance to do all mentioned above, which fills them with proud and joy for their darlings and gives even more extent of happiness to women. Nevertheless, does this change influence the relationship between a man and a woman? It certainly does and not always in the best way. To start with, men don’t consider themselves as breadwinners any more, providing a number of families with unbelievable understanding and happiness in case his wife is ready to take up such a responsibility. Househusbands are not a surprise nowadays, but the number of men living on a woman’s account without marrying her and without taking care of house chores should be greatly decreased, to my mind. Another problem is that such a quick change in the man-woman relations will influence the next generation greatly. There used to be a number of unspoken and even unrealized small details in everyday life of a family, which gave children the idea of a strong man, who is the head of the family and a loving careful woman that should be taken care of. Modern children are confused. Girls are trying to behave as their strong mothers, which results in them being less feminine. Boys are becoming gentler and even feminine, following examples of their fathers and looking for strong reliable women to behave as their mothers used to. The only possible conclusion is the following. We are probably on the way to better understanding. That’s true and the reason is that people are becoming sexless to some extent. We can choose to be strong or weak, to

A Short Story - 1675 Words

Ed leaned in to peer at hood of the deep blue Mercedes Benz. He wore a well-loved overcoat and khakis that had at one point been a brighter color but had long ago turned dark. Touching the finely waxed hood, he gazed at his reflection, warped and bent. He was not a tall nor a short man, and he was lean and weathered. Though his hair was naturally rather tidy, it had been awhile since he had buzzed it, the waves of hair tumbling around his face. Two bright eyes peered out from the mass of strands, watching the world go by. Day in, and day out, he saw crowds of people hustle through their busy lives in downtown Seattle. They would hurry in to their high tech jobs, and sit in their high tech cubicles, eating their high tech lunches and†¦show more content†¦Her hand was on her hip, and a smart smile was spread across her face. I can let you pop back in for a few more minutes if you want.† A grin crept onto Ed’s face, and he shook his head, â€Å"No absolutely not, I was just making sure it was locked before work.† They laughed and Ed put his arm around Ana’s shoulders. They walked down the street, both of their bellies empty and smiles on their faces. â€Å"Are we going to church today, Ed?† â€Å"Today and every day, of course†, he replied. They walked on past a group of street performers, and stopped to listen to the music - the artists predictably shifted their performance away from Ed and Ana to a group of families nearby who had paused, vanilla lattes and hot teas in hand. One of the women in the group dropped a five into the open guitar case. Ana caught Ed by the arm. â€Å"Wait here†, she grabbed an old newspaper out of a bin and tore off a bill sized section. â€Å"Thank you gentlemen, for your extraordinary performance.† She curtsied and dropped the piece of paper into the case. â€Å"Don’t spend it all in one place now!† She and Ed continued to mosey down the street. â€Å"You sure showed them†, he said, chuckling to himself and smiling at her. â€Å"No, I’m giving the gentlemen what they want! This led to their ‘one gene-one enzyme’ theory. The ‘one gene – one enzyme’ hypothesis changed to the ‘one gene – one protein’ hypothesis, once it was demonstrated that there are other proteins besides enzymes that are encoded by genes. Thomas Morgan’s work led to a greater understanding of how genes are arranged on chromosomes and how genetic material can be exchanged (during crossing over) in meiosis. Morgan’s experiments showed without any doubt that: * the gene for eye colour in fruit flies is located on the X chromosome, and * hereditary factors can be exchanged between the X chromosomes of an individual. Morgan experimented with fruit flies (Drosophilia melanogaster) and determined that genes are carried on chromosomes. He used crossing over to determine locations of genes. He discovered that sex chromosomes look different to each other, and that eye colour gene in Drosophilia was located on the X chromosome, leading to the discovery of sex linkage. Boveri experimented with sea urchins and showed that a complete set of chromosomes was needed for normal development and that the NUCLEUS of a cell was concerned with inheritance. He postulated that each chromosome was different, chromosomes were transferred from one generation to the next during cell division, and that chromosomes must carry the many hereditary factors. Sutton – he observed during meiosis that chromosomes behaved randomly and gametes receive only one chromosome from each pair. | Distinguish between the terms gene and allele| A gene is a section of DNA that codes for proteins that expresses itself as the phenotype for example, two genes for eye colour. Poverty in America Essay Example For Students

Poverty in America Essay This year celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the War on Poverty. Initiated by President Lindon B. Johnson, the war aimed to set the standard for a new age of government policy aimed at combating the rising poverty rates in America. Most notably, the speech resulted in Congress passing the Economic Opportunity Act, which formed the Office of Economic Opportunity to distribute federal funds towards impoverished citizens on a state and local level. Since that declaration over fifty years ago, federal spending on antipoverty programs has reached nearly $15 trillion inflation-constant dollars. With all of this spending toward reducing poverty in America, some progress was inevitable. Yet with the poverty rate still hovering at 15% and a record number of Americans living in poverty since the war has started, many have begun to reevaluate the current government policies and tactics being used to combat poverty in the nation. The persistent issue of poverty in America suggests a much deeper, more nuanced societal problem, seemingly resulting from familial instability, value systems, and everything in-between. Capitalism can be compared to any race. In any race, the reward is greatest for those who finish first. In the capitalism race, the fastest and most prepared competitors win the race. Welfare helps those in the class of poverty but what do they do with those checks on the 1st and 15th. If the people on welfare were hurting or trying to recover welfare wouldnt be a problem but when they stay on it for a long period it puts a strain on the American economy. We need a more demanding application for welfare to really see who needs the help and whose just trying to get a free check in the mail. According to Susan Mayer, who conducted a study on poverty, there are two types of poor people. Some simply lacked money but still had middle class values and benefit from government income support. Then there was the true lower class that would live in squalor even if their incomes were doubled. But how can we tell the difference between the two, you cant judge a book by its cover. So as to show that welfare is helping America we should have more accurate reports to help us outlook on what is really happening. Or should we banish welfare and live the rule of, the survival of the fittest. If pushed to survive and not spoon fed by the government maybe the lower class would show some initiative to work. But if that did not work it would put a lot of people on the streets begging and peddling. Or maybe the answer to this welfare is just giving America its basic needs to live. Both sides of the argument weigh heavily and are very strong. So will America ever see the day with no poverty or is poverty among us day to day. Bibliography: .

Hedda Gabler Essay Example

Hedda Gabler Paper The presentation of rebellious maidens in Ibsens Hedda Gabler and Sophocles Antigone In Henrik Ibsens Hedda Gabler and Sophocles Antigone, the main characters are rebellious and do what is not expected of them. Hedda and Antigone are rebellious in respective ways depending on what is accepted by society, the viewers ideals at the time, and the law that governed the people. Considering the expectations that each woman has, Antigone and Hedda are rebellious maidens. The word rebel is usually used to describe someone who resists authority, whereas maiden is applied to a young unmarried woman, hinting that a maiden is innocent and pure. From the audiences view, in the play Antigone, Antigone is rebellious in a way for she goes against Creons order but is reasonable. For her action of burying her brother is justified. You cannot mean to bury him? Against the order? I will bury my brother(Antigone, Exodus 44 and 66). Though Antigone goes against the law, from the readers perspective, her actions are right because it is taught in her culture that when dead, the body needs a proper burial. Without a proper burial, the person cannot move on to the next world and is stuck on Earth as a ghost. It is crucial that her brother is given a proper burial. In Hedda Gabler, Hedda acts rude and superior to those around her as her position as an aristocrat allows her to do so. From the audiences point of view, Hedda is a woman who is malicious but at the same time fascinating. (Hedda Gabler, Act 2, 271) This comment from Hedda seems cruel, yet it is tolerable for Hedda to do such a thing because her role as an aristocrat permits her to. In each society, a woman plays a particular role, depending on her position. During the ancient Greek civilization, Theban women did not have as many rights as men, who were more privileged. Women were very obedient, and followed the rules set by men. Antigones role in Thebes was a princess belonging to the royal house of Thebes. As a young woman, she must obey the laws set by the king, her uncle, Creon. When a crime is committed in Thebes, it is assumed automatically that the crime is carried out by a male, for the thought of an innocent woman committing a crime is unthinkable. Women living in the Victorian Era were similar to women in Thebes, in that they were both were considered inferior to men in their societies. In the nineteenth century, women were expected to obey their spouse. Devoting time to her children and the household was a womans main responsibility. The bodies of women were to be fully covered, according to Victorian morals, for a womans body is considered to be the property of her husband. 1 Thus in the play Hedda Gabler, Hedda is expected to follow the anticipations of Victorian society. Even though she is a woman, Antigone commits rebellious acts. Antigones first defiant doing is going against the order of Creon and giving her brother a proper burial. Is he not my brother, and yours, whether you like it or not? I shall never desert him, never (Antigone, Exodus 44-46). Antigone tells her sister Ismene that she will do what she believes is right, for she wishes not to leave her own flesh and blood out in the open to be eaten by dogs. Her act is not only accepted by the reader, but also by society. As Thebans believe in proper burials for the dead. Though her actions are understandable, she is viewed as rebelling since she broke the law. It is a surprise for everyone to find out that it is a woman, not any woman but a princess who defies the laws. On first finding out about the burial of Antigones brother, Polynices, Creon demands from the sentry to find him, the sinner, And bring him here into my sight (Antigone, Exodus 344). To everyones astonishment, it is not a he but a she. Creon punishes Antigone for her crime of burying her brother by imprisoning her in a cave as she awaits her punishment of being stoned. In the cave, Antigone decides to take her own life before being stoned. Antigones second rebellious act is her suicide. Antigones suicide maybe an expected act for the audience but it is still rebellious. We saw her hanging by the neck (Antigone, Exodus 1220). Antigone hangs herself in the cave that she is imprisoned in before Creon can tell her that she will not be punished. Antigones act is one that shocks each person because she took matters into her own hands and took her own life rather than being stoned. By hanging herself, Antigone shows that she accepts her fate and does not deny death. Unlike most women in Thebes, Antigone did not care about what the laws were and did what she believed is to be right; she did not want the approval of men before taking action.

Movie research paper The Truman Show Essays

Movie research paper The Truman Show Essays Movie research paper The Truman Show Essay Movie research paper The Truman Show Essay The truman show is founded on an enormous secret that all of the studios advertising has been determined to reveal. I didnt know the secret when I saw the film, and was able to enjoy the little doubts and wonderings that the filmmakers so carefully planted. () Those fortunate audience members () will be able to appreciate the meticulous way director Peter Weir and writer Andrew Niccol have constructed a jigsaw plot around their central character, who doesnt suspect that hes living his entire life on live television. (Ebert 1) This film by director Peter Weir and writer Andrew Niccol tells about a man (Truman Burbank) who who finds out that his whole life is actually TV show. The movie has an incredible influence on America and the international community. What maybe no one would expect, this movie inspired some producers especially a famous European producer, John De Mol, to produce a reality TV show called Big Brother. He is also very famous for his produced TV shows Fear Factor and Who wants to be a Millionaire? (DooYoo 1). The Truman Show is not only famous because it is a typical 20th century movie, it also includes one of the todays best actors. Jim Carrey , Ed Harris , and Laura Linney are only three of many actors of this movie who performance their role in a perfect way. Also the strange storyline makes the movie to special in its genre. The storyline is deceptive, almost maliciously so (Myers 1), and is based on several movies like Edtv (1999), which is also about a man whose life is broadcast li ve 24 hours a day on television, he plays a similar character (IMDB 2). It is also very famous because it contains never before seen technical aspects like the directors office of the TV show. The many camera shots from every position, like garbage cans, behind car radios, and billboards, make it very individual. Truman Burbank, played by Jim Carrey, is living in a suburban setting and works as a salesman. He doesnt realize that he is living in a fake world with actors all around him. His lifestyle is like an ordinary Joe whose life seems to be pretty idyllic. He has a good job, a nice house, and a beautiful wife (Jardine 1); he goes to work everyday and is totally satisfied with his life. Only one day, when he his on his way to work, a camera light, from the film producers falls down from the sky and lands close to him. He picks it up, but doesnt really think about it. In the car, after hitting the radio because it is not working properly, he can hear directions about where he is going coming out of his speakers. The last strange and most important scene is when he recognizes his father, who was purposely drowned while sailing with Truman, on the street. When Truman recognizes him, his father is taken away by some mysterious, casually dressed men. He begins wondering what is wrong with him or his world. After watching his environment with more attention, he realizes that everything is repeated over and over. For example he sees a yellow bug, a man with flowers, and a woman on a bicycle is passing his house every ten minutes. Something is missing [in his life], and he thinks perhaps he might find it in Fiji, where Lauren (Natascha McElhone), the only woman he really lo ved, allegedly has moved with her family (Ebert 1). However he cant take a boat because he always remembers the day when he lost his father. The TV show director also indirectly doesnt allow him to escape, because it would ruin the TV show. When Truman is sleeping and the producers of the TV show dont pay attention, Truman is finally able to escape with a boat by himself. Christof, the director, tries everything to stop him, before can escape from the set. After Truman almost drowned in a manufactures heavy thunderstorm, Truman reaches the edge of the set and tries to walk out. That is the first scene in which Christof and Truman have their first conversation. Christof tries to keep Truman from leaving the film set arguing argues, that he has created him and the world he has created for [Truman] is the good world, not the sick world [outside of the set] (The Truman Show). However, Truman decides to step out of the set and says the sentence he always said to his neighbors every morning; Good morning! And in case I dont see you: good af ternoon, good evening and good night! (The Truman Show). After that you can only see Trumans back as he steps into a black background and Christof shutting down his little desktop, through which he watched Truman talking to him. The directing by Peter Weir plays a big role in making The Truman Show a terrific movie. He selected several actors who were not very typical for their role. Truman, played by Jim Carey, who might simultaneously break your heart as easily as he makes you laugh (Turan 1) was not expected to present this role that perfect. Also Cristof (Ed Harris), who won the Golden Globe as Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (HFPA 1), and Hanna Gill (Laura Linney), who was nominated for Favorite Supporting Actress Drama by the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards (Blockbuster 1), make this movie to a highlight in his genre. It seems that Weir wanted to make up a total different kind of movies. He says about the movie: The Truman Show was based on Michael Jackson. You watch The Truman Show and, I mean, Jim Carrey did a fantastic job, but Michael Jackson is Truman. Hes who I based him on and he is the nearest thing to Truman. The director continues to say, The connection between Michael and Truman is simple they both have a heart, and people treat them like objects for entertainment value. (Justice Prevailed 1)

Definition Methods Of Data Collection And Analysis Dissertation

Definition Methods Of Data Collection And Analysis - Dissertation Example The study will involve both secondary review and primary survey to gather the required data (Bergman, 2008). The secondary data collection method in this study is necessary to give us the current position about the earlier studies carried on the topic. The literature search will be conducted for relevant articles published between 2000 and 2014. The comparative studies that reported such outcomes as error rates, radiologist productivity, and departmental productivity will be selected. The retrieved studies will be examined for quality and risk of bias (Hammersley, 2012). On the other hand, the primary survey using semi-structured interview will help carry out a fresh study using the shortfalls in the literature review to help balance the weakness of the literature. The primary survey will be the focus on such workflows as filmless with speech recognition, filmless with manual transcription, the film with manual transcription, the film with speech recognition. This is also necessary as it will incorporate the development that has taken place in the execution of the previous studies so as to remain updated. Two surveys will be submitted to the candidate sites. Here, the first survey will be used to determine the suitable available data for follow-up. The subsequent survey will request data for report turn-around times, report volume and full-time equivalent staffing levels (Bowling, 2009). Data will be gathered and stored in a Microsoft Access Database for the subsequent statistical analysis to be performed in Excel. The regression and correlation analytical tools will be used in analyzing the data gathered.

How to Assure Information Continuity and Recovery in Business Coursework

How to Assure Information Continuity and Recovery in Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery - Coursework Example While numerous weaknesses may be diminished or even eradicated through technical, management, or operational resolutions as part of the state’s general risk managing effort, it is practically impossible to entirely eradicate all risks. In numerous cases, critical assets may be located outside the organization’s control – for instance telecommunications or electric power – and the organization may be incapable of ensuring their accessibility. Therefore effective disaster recovery planning, implementation, and analysis are indispensible to diminish the risk of service and system unavailability. The production environment of an organization persistently evolves. Whether that is a result of software or hardware updates, the addition or removal of systems, or changes in configuration; the variance from the recovery answer grows broader with each change, increasing the chance of the failure of the solution. The maintenance of the technology recovery solution - both plans and recovery configurations - should be kept in lock-step with the production environment. One only has to look at the quantity of preparation, documentation updates and contract upgrades that occur in support of an exercise to see there’s a significant divergence which can occur over a fairly short period of time. All these factors can negatively impact recovery results. As much effort as is put into plan development, it’s surprising how many companies do not have sufficient detail in their recovery procedures that will support the recovery of their key technologies. Even companies that test often abandon their plans and instead rely on the knowledge of their people, or use their plans but never add the detail they need. This may be worse than not testing at all, since it creates the perception the plan will support a recovery; however if the primary team isn’t available during the incident, recovery can be challenging without access

M.BH.Q - Assignment Example Everything about him verbal or non-verbal keeps the audience attentive throughout the whole talk. McGonigal is not an attention grabber. This is evident from her less delightful and inspiring introduction to her not so creative visual aids throughout the presentation. The fact that her voice is flat without any intonation even when she is making an important point or an emphasis shows her weakness as a motivational speaker. Her voice volume is low even with the microphone and one has to add the volume to hear what she is saying clearly. She has no facial expression similar to her flat voice and humor is also non- existent. She has constant hand movement and gestures which is distracting. Her lack of pace in the talk makes it even more boring and so is her lack of stage movement. She also seems not confident with her presentation or her ability to present which is not a good thing to exhibit to the audience throughout the talk show. He is one great speaker and definitely an attention grabber with his loud voice and eye contact which he keeps trained on his audience at all times. He keeps asking the audience to finish up his sentences and hence keeps them well engaged and involved throughout the whole talk. Lipkin is also well endowed with humor as the whole session the audience keeps on laughing on his jokes and sometimes he even laughs with them hence leaving time to catch breath and people to absorb what he is talking about. He has different intonations to insist on words he want people to focus on and his facial expression indicates he is enjoying giving the talk as much as his audience is receiving. Robinson is very engaging to the crowd and he catches their attention through his constant questions and need for them to finish up his sentences for him. His humor makes up for his lack of stage movement. His lack of constant had movement and gestures apart from wen

Love is a common theme in Shakespeares comedies, with the action of the play often following a similar pattern: love is declared, is challenged in some way and is finally reasserted in the act of marriage. Much Ado About Nothing is no exception and presents this plot structure through the pairings of Claudio and Hero, and Benedick and Beatrice. These couples illustrate two different types of love, and their portrayed experiences are revealing of Elizabethan attitudes and beliefs regarding love. Claudio and Hero provide us with an example of a swiftly progressing love which culminates in marriage little more than a few weeks after they have first met. For an Elizabethan audience the concept of love at first sight would have been widely regarded as a valid possibility in life. The speed with which the two young characters move from strangers to husband and wife allows Shakespeare to present the courting process within the society of nobility. Such a rapid progression is commented on by Claudio as he explains his newfound love I would have salvd it with a longer treatise (I.i.289). However, it seems that once the first pangs of love occur, the action moves onto the next stage in the process. There are many rules and regulations when it comes to expressing love for another. This can be seen in Claudios consequent actions; rather than approach Hero himself, it is preferable for his friend to woo her on his behalf, in the words of Don Pedro, I will break with her and with her fa ther (I.i.283). In todays society the procedure of asking permission from the father of a prospective wife is often seen as old-fashioned and is nowhere near as common a practice as in Shakespeares day. Through speech an Elizabethan nobleman would be expected to demonstrate intelligence and wit with the impression of spontaneity. In the same way, when attracting a woman he would be expected to impress with lavish and clever language. Much importance is placed on the language of love expected from a suitor within the play. Shakespeares narration reflects the qualities of such language by switching from prose to iambic pentameter, a rhythmical form more fitting for descriptions of love. Don Pedro reminds Claudio of the power of a lovers words as they discuss his intentions towards Hero, Thou wilt be like a lover presently, / And tire the hearer with a book of words (I.i.280-1). As a young, inexperienced man, Claudio clearly needs the help of his friend and is naturally grateful to have gained an ally in his endeavours. Don Pedros role in the relationship of Claudio and Hero brings attention to the importance placed on the intervention of a third person. Again, this is a practice not p articularly common in modern society, at least not with any successful results. Benedick and Beatrices relationship differs from that of Claudio and Hero in the history the two have between them. There is a reference to a previous courtship in which Beatrice feels she was treated badly. This history between them results in the portrayal of a more mature relationship and a love that is formed through similarities in characters and mutual beliefs. Before the two characters fall in love they share the attitude of adversity towards the idea of marriage and falling in love, Beatrice claims that she would rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me'(I.i.107-108). As a result they are constantly rebuked and made fun of for holding such a low opinion of marriage. The reaction of other characters towards the two cynics suggests that marriage is the ultimate symbol of love and should be the goal to which all aspire to, a belief that is reinforced when Benedick and Beatrice are eventually proved wrong and succumb to the powers of love themselves. In Shak espeares time marriage would have been the only way for women to better themselves financially and socially. Men would also have gained status by marrying and thus providing heirs to any property and wealth. With this in mind, there seems less emphasis on the love aspect of marriage than the idealistic impressions of marriage in the play would have us believe. To return to the relation of Shakespeares portrayal of love to a modern society, marriage as a representation of love no longer has such significance, with equal respect given to single and married individuals. The power of Cupid is frequently referred to in relation to both couples. This power is often transferred to a third party that intervenes to aid the progression of love. Don Pedro is at the forefront of this matchmaking when he decides to bring together Benedick and Beatrice, If we can do this, Cupid is no longer an archer; his glory shall be ours, for we are the only love-gods (II.i.355-357). By tricking each character with lies about the other, they are manipulated into falling in love. Far from the natural concept of falling in love uncontrollably, Don Pedro and Hero command the feelings of Benedick and Beatrice through created scenarios. It is the power of calculated words that actually take effect, as noted by Hero as she discusses the plot with Ursula, Of this matter / Is Cupids crafty arrow made, / That only wounds by hearsay (III.i.21-23). This level of secrecy seems characteristic of court society at the time, a level of intervention which ultimately helps or hinders. The reactions and descriptions of people in love within the play suggest a darker side of love, often characterised by physical symptoms. For example, Hero collapses at the very thought of being accused of infidelity. Also, Don Pedro and Hero both refer to the supposed noticeable difference in appearance of their lovesick friends. On proposing not to tell Beatrice of Benedicks love for her, she concludes that he will consume away in sighs, waste inwardly (III.i.78). Strangely, Benedick and Beatrice seem drawn to the idea of the other suffering from the pain of an unrequited love. The image of Benedick wasting away clearly has a powerful impression on Beatrice who almost immediately falls in love with him. Having overheard talk of Benedicks anguish (as well as his excellent qualities as a gentleman and soldier) she begins to think of marriage, To bind our loves up in a holy band (III.i.114). She also mentions the taming of her wild heart (III.i.112) as a result of Benedicks love, a ph rase that brings to mind the later play of The Taming of the Shrew. In both plays, it seems that the love of a man is able to tame an outspoken shrewish character, a belief that many in an Elizabethan audience would have shared. Much Ado About Nothing presents us with two pairings of lover that demonstrate two different experiences of love, both governed by societal codes of conduct that no longer have significance in modern society. In contrast, Claudio and Hero show a speedy, formal process of courting, while Benedick and Beatrice represent a more drawn out, resisting relationship. While both couplings suffer the consequences of intervention of others, the latter marry purely as a result of meddling friends. It seems that love in the play is concerned more with superficial appearances and falsely created scenarios than actual feelings. Views of love in the play clearly differ from modern day opinion, but this is not to say that we cannot relate to the play because we are not part of an Elizabethan audience; our codes of conduct in dating and matchmaking have merely evolved to suit todays society. Live for Today :: Personal Narrative Michael Jordan Essays

Live for Today Tomorrow, the day after today. It is an indefinite time in the future. One question many people have on their minds is, what does tomorrow hold in store for me? What â€Å"if tomorrow never comes†, in the words of a song by the country-artist, Garth Brooks. Could I say I finished everything I started, or did I accomplish everything that I always wanted to do, but never did for fear of it being too risky? No one should feel they did not take the high road in order to enable them to fulfill that one great adventure. Life is full of ups and downs; it could be described as a huge pot of gold with a few dingy stones mixed together. The dingy stones are the few misfortunes one may come across; the gold is what everyone wants, and hopefully attains. To achieve anything, one must take risks and not ask questions regarding tomorrow. I, like many others, could choose to look into a clear, crystal ball and see what the future holds. Instead I decide to look away and be adventurous. This way I get to have the exciting feeling of not knowing what is behind door number three or four. Yes, it is a scary feeling, but also one of hope. Life Experience I had played on the volleyball team all through my junior high days, and was a starter on the â€Å"A† freshman team when I reached high school. As a sophomore, I couldn’t believe it when I got the towel thrown in on me. I was devastated when I was cut from the team. Volleyball was my life; I absolutely loved the sport. How could they do this to me? Everyone told me things would turn out fine, but how did they know? A close friend of mine wrote me a letter stating, â€Å"I know that right now it is hard to accept the paths that God has chosen for us, but I am sure whatever you decide to do with what has been thrown in your way you can surpass everyone else†. I thought about what that really meant, and decided she was right. I had been thrown something I was not sure what to do with or how to handle, but with a little advice from my brother, Chris, I decided to take a risk and try something new. I chose to become a member of our school’s cross-country team.

Jessie Pope Poetry Essays

Jessie Pope Poetry Essays Jessie Pope Poetry Paper Jessie Pope Poetry Paper stand? , gun? , run? . The insistence seems impossible to resist, like a constant drum beat inside the soldiers minds making the soldiers feel like they have no alternative but to go to war. Dulce et Decorum est has an accusatory tone; this tone is directed mockingly at my friend, particularly in the last stanza. The poets anger builds and the use of the direct and accusatory tone excels. The poet gives his description impact by speaking in the present tense guttering, choking, drowning, this gives a sense of immediacy and desperate warning to the soldiers to believe the happy stories of war. The language in Whos for the game? is crude as the poet has never before experienced war: she creates a false image to young, nai ve boys of what war might be like. The poet has a target audience of young men similar to Wilfred Owens poem though he tries to put across to true image of war. Wilfred Owen uses powerful imagery to describe the horror of the war, guttering, giving images of a candle about to flicker out. He uses the image of a devil like a devils sick of sin; the soldiers are sick of sin but ironically devils should never be sick of sin. Similes used near the beginning of the poem such as bent double like old beggars under sacks suggest that the soldiers are now on the fringes of society. In theory the soldiers should be young and brave, but Owen reduces them to old, forgotten about hags. In Whos for the game? Pope uses an enthralling rugby game to describe the war, to her readers. This quite contradicts Owens views that war has made the soldiers old like hags. The two poems have quite different messages. Whos for the game? has a clear propaganda message as it tricks young, nai ve men into thinking war is something its not, whereas Wilfred Owen has a definite anti-war message, conveying the truth to men and soldiers that have been in, or are considering going to war. The town poems are very different in their form. Jesse Pope uses a very regular rhyme and rhythm: a strong beat is felt particularly at the end of each line, emphasising the patronising question words to the soldiers. The last beat falls at the end of the last stanza on you as if the poet is physically pointing their finger at the juvenile solider or reader. This is very personal and direct. In contrast to this simple poem, Wilfred Owens is quite complex. It does have rhyme such as sacks and backs though in between lines 1 and 3, is sludge, slowing the poem right down, these awkward sounding consonants conveying an onomatopoeia effect. In the second stanza lines 1 and 3, and 2 and 4 rhyme, though 5 and 6 dont creating struggle as the poem doesnt flow, again emphasising the struggle and nightmares of the soldiers that are intruding on the present. Both poems had a very strong and powerful though different impact on the reader. In Whos for the game? we feel angry and frustrated at Jesse Pope for giving the soldiers a false illusion of what war was. Being young and nai ve the young men still look for guidance and this sort of poetry we feel is unethical. In comparison, Dulce et De Corum Est makes us feel encouraged that someone was fighting for the truth to be told. The fact that the soldiers were only young and nai ve was clearly recognised and emphasised: children ardent for some desperate glory Wilfred Owen had the true picture of how wrong Jesse Pope was to spread poems full of lies. However, the reader does finish the poem feeling proud that young soldiers were prepared to fight for our country until they were no longer able. Disabled by Wilfred Owen is an anti-war poem, describing in much detail the story of a naive, young man going into war to impress, unaware of the full detail of what he was signing up to, in fact throwing away his life. Does it matter by Siegfried Sassoon, similarly, this is an anti-war poem putting across his views in a very patronising manor making his strong anger against war very clear. Where the poem Disabled is a sad, detailed story, Does it matter? is an angry, but simple poem, filled with sarcasm. Where disabled subtlety portrays the anti-war feeling of the poet, Does is matter? is again anti-war, but filled with the poets anger and fury. Disabled uses heavy, detailed description to gain the audiences attention, though Does it matter? uses simple language in good writing techniques such as the use of clichi s and sarcasm in order to entertain and again get the audience listening. Both poets have a clear anti-war message, and both seem strongly against Jesse Pope, who wrongly, wrote poems about a war which she had never experienced poets such as Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, along with many others, aimed to convince the public that wars were far from sweet and decorous. The mood of Disabled reaches for the sadness and pity of the audience by going into great depth about a young soldier, where Does it matter wastes no time in unmistakably putting across his outrage of trying to trick young, nai ve soldiers to the reader. The poem Disabled changes the tense of the poem frequently, alternating from present to past to future, giving the reader full knowledge of the exciting history, sad situation the young man is in, and what destroyed future the man has ahead of him. He is described presently as legless, sewn short at elbow as if he is now not a whole human, not a real man. Ironically, he was legless when signing up for the war: when hed drunk a peg, He thought hed better join, and on completing the job, he is now permanently disabled, and has lost the admiration he once had for signing up to go to war, before he threw away his knees it ironically seems he intended to through them away, though now he is lonely and in self-pity as he has no legs and foreshortened arms. The young man feels destroyed by the loss of his limbs, the young man that were whole ironically, he feels emasculated due to him loosing his limbs. He will no longer never feel again how slim girls waists are, or how warm their subtle hands; it seems he was extremely nai ve into what he was actually signing up to, which was in fact throwing away his youth and even life. Its almost a lifetime ago, as war has matured him so much, from the quote and that he had a girlfriend his Meg it would seem he was popular with the ladies. This would probably be due to his extremely good looks, there was an artist silly for his face it would now be such a contrast, as all the colour and excitement has drained out of his life, shivered in his ghastly suit of grey, his life has gone from colour quickly to black and white. It would seem ironic, that he signed up to war to impress the girls, though now he is touched like some queer disease by girls, he wanted to impress though he is now only being repulsed at and some are even quite afraid of him. On going to receive admiration, pity they may dole he receives none, only little pity. The young man was tricked into war by people such as Jesse Pope, and it can be easily understood from this why poets such as Siegfried Sassoon wrote with such power, and anger not holding back as they wanted the soldiers to know the real truth. Does it matter? loosing your legs? it seems for the young man in Disabled it did considerably, ruined his life in fact. For people will always be kind Sassoon writes, we have learnt that this is definitely not always the case, as the man from war was felt he was touched like some queer disease even though the simple reason he was in that state was due to him fighting for their country, putting his life on the line. He is described presently as waiting for dark as if there is nothing to do but simply wait for death, drowned in his own sadness and blood, a leap of purple spurted from his thigh when to impress was what he signed up for, what he received is so mething unimaginably different. The insensitiveness and greed of the people left at home is more clearly shown in Does it matter: need not show that you mind others come in after hunting, to gobble their muffins and eggs there is a sense of ignorance and lack of sympathy to the injured coming back from war. When ironically, if the soldiers hadnt of gone, the whole country may have been at risk, and the ones left at home would be unable to go hunting and gobble their muffins and eggs. The poem Disabled ends with repetition on the end of the last two lines, Why dont they come? Why dont they come? Calling out and emphasising to the reader the desperate situation the soldiers have landed themselves into. There is no longer anyone there for him, no one to look at him. This once more, all agrees with Siegfried Sassoons poem Does it matter and people wont say that your mad his strong sarcasm has backed up evidence after reading the story of Disabled. Sassoon writes mockingly at what comfort may be given theres such splendid work for the blind this is platitude, trying to make someone feel better, when really it is simply an empty comfort as how could that make up for losing your sight. Does it matter? also disdains the poem Dulce et Decorum est: Do they matter? those dreams from the pit? for the soldiers being described in this poem their sleep is far from dreams, its nightmares, phantasmagorical, re-living the times of the pit, as they are intruding on the soldiers present lives: before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning having a horrific impact on the soldiers lives. Both poems have a clear anti-war message, though where Sassoons has writes in a youthful idealistic way about war, Owen writes in a very satirical manor though has a serious moral purpose underneath with many other feelings and emotions attached such as bitterness and anger, disillusioning the reader. Where, the young man in disabled is a clear victim of Jesse Popes propaganda Told it was like a game, similar to her poem Whos for the game the young man thought it would be like football, and the injuries were good, a blood smear down his leg carried shoulder-high, it was after football though war is no comparison to a game of football or even rugby as it was likened to by Jesse Pope the young man was robbed of his disillusions. The poem Disabled has regular rhyming; each stanza has a different pace creating different moods for the reader. For example stanza 4 has is quick paced showing the excitement in the young mans life before he went to war: someone said hed look a God in kilts, thats why; he may be, too, to please his Meg; his life was so exhilarating and fast. This then contrasts to the present and future tense stanzas which are slow and dont flow easily for the reader, particularly the last stanza which has no rhyming, this is difficult for the reader to read similar to what a difficult life the young man now leads. Similarly the poem does it matter has a very regular rhyming pattern, lines 1 and 5, 2 and 3 rhyme, the forth line always not. This creates what could seem a very simple poem for the reader to read, though it has a very complex meaning inside quite different to disabled, where most of the poets opinions are detailed, and on the surface. Adding to this, the consistent repetition of Does it matter? at the beginning of each stanza brings obvious sarcasm, and the true effects of war on the soldiers. From reading and analysing these poems I have become open minded about my view of the different poets forms of writing. At first I was extremely against the crude way of writing that Jesse Pope did, though I now release that if the truth had been revealed all along, there is a possibility no one would of wanted to fight and our country would have been quite different from what it is today. I thought the propaganda poetry, especially Wilfred Owens Disabled was particularly emotional as the situation can still be related to today.

Secrecy, a major downfall

Secrecy, a major downfall Often it is necessary for a character to keep a secret in order to achieve his/her goals. However, divulging this secret at a certain moment might in fact affect the outcomes and events of the work as a whole. Similarly Henrik Ibsen's A Doll House brings about this topic by the incorporation of Nora into the play in which secrecy affects the outcome of not only the character but of the entire literary work. Thus proving that secrecy can lead to the downfall of the character and the view of those around them as Nora is when her secret is revealed, inevitably causing a certain lost.A Doll House is a remarkable play which depicts and brings about the problems with secrecy through it's character, portrayed her as Nora. This secret that Nora has kept and "In time she will [reveal]" is the catalyst for the turn of events which occur.English: Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen photo portr...Nora's current social position and status prevents her from revealing and divulging why she borrowed money from a stranger and forged a contact. The reason for this action taken by Nora which is later on revealed is to save the precious life of her husband whom with out the proper care would have died. This deceit however brings the destruction of the character and the downfall of her being. While Nora would have chosen a good time to exposed her secret, another event expedited this secret and brought about the truth into the air, this even was the hiring of Mrs. Christine Linde an old school mate of Nora which needed to get a job, this therefore added to the inevitable lost of position/job of Nils Krogstad. This automatically caused Krogstad to try to manipulate Nora into convincing her husband Torvald Helmer to get his...

Quakers' Contribution in Anti-Slavery Movement Research Paper

Quakers' Contribution in Anti-Slavery Movement - Research Paper Example All thirteen of the colonies permitted slavery and did not allow slaves the basic freedoms outlined in the Declaration of Independence. Slaves in America had no freedom and were subject to the whims and demands of their masters. The Louisiana code stated that "A slave could not make contracts, own property, or form legal partnerships on his or her own" (Oakes xiv). Family relationships among slaves were not honored and as a result, there were no requirements that slave owners keep families intact. In fact, many times, children were taken from mothers and sold as soon as they were strong enough to work themselves. Husbands and fathers were sold without regard to the feelings of wives or children. The people who were most against slavery were those who were involved in organized religion. Quakers believed in ending slavery one slaveholder at a time. They sent letters, wrote to newspapers, authored pamphlets and almanacs, using any form of publication they could to decry the institution of slavery and encourage slave owners to free their slaves. Quakers outlined a method through which slaveholders would "first educate slaves in reading and writing, teach them the principles of truth and righteousness, teach them a trade, and then set them free" (Brown 6). While it cannot be argued that the Quakers, or Society of Friends, played a crucial role in the anti-slavery movement, in all likelihood the movement would have gone on and would have been successful without their influence. There were many people in antebellum America who were willing to make great personal sacrifices to see that there was eventual freedom for all Americans. These people spanned the races, religions and cultures of the time and were dedicated to the idea of freedom for all. Body The Quakers brought up the inappropriateness of slavery in the 1600s, thus bringing the issue to the forefront of many political and social debates. They began work against slavery and did not stop their work until the e nd of slavery in America. One distinct advantage that the Quakers had in their anti-slavery work was that they had an already established network of people willing to assist runaway slaves and those who had already been freed. Friends could meet in large, public groups to make plans regarding their abolitionist activities without fear of raising suspicion because that is what they had been doing prior to their involvement in the Underground Railroad and other abolitionist activities. Additionally, the Quakers involved in anti-slavery activities knew that they could trust their fellow Friends with their lives, which is what was at stake when they assisted runaway slaves to freedom. Before slaves began to receive help from Quakers, or anyone else, in their resistance movement, they had devised many ways to confront slavery. They discovered that violence was rarely a very successful method of resistance, as the slaveholders responded immediately and intensely. Instead, they used more s ubtle methods of resistance such as "work slowdowns, feigning illness, breaking tools, and sabotaging equipment under the guise of clumsiness" (Horton and Horton 120). Slaves also used song to fight slavery. These songs told stories of escape, sent encoded messages, set the pace for work and placated slave owners by giving the appearance of passivity and contentment. Running away was another form of

Artist of Egyptian Old Kingdom Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Artist of Egyptian Old Kingdom - Essay Example As the study declares the pre-dynastic time period in the Egyptian history gave the actual form of expression to the Egyptian art. That was the time period when Egyptian art actually flourished and took a new meaning of its form. The third (3rd) and the forth (4th) Dynasty introduced the meaning of expression and freedom in the Egyptian art and culture. This trend was then followed by all the generations who come afterwards. Since an art has ample space to absorb all the possible changes in it, Egyptian art could also take in all the actions of exploration and freedom of expression in it. As explained by that the cases meant for burials and funerals of kings and their relatives are the most remarkable commemoration that exist since the time of the Early Dynasties of Egypt. He also explains that the alterations in the concepts of majestic burials are a symbol of advancements in not only the architecture and building. Infact this process of change and alterations can also be observed in the concepts of afterlife. The Egyptian art reached its culminating point in the era of Dynasty IV. Dynasty V and VI then brought the technical progress and advancements throughout the country afterwards. Explains that â€Å"an artist of old Egyptian kingdom did not hold any special recognition for the work he had done in his time.  The Egyptian art reached its culminating point in the era of Dynasty IV.   Dynasty V and VI then brought the technical progress and advancements throughout the country afterwards.

Evolution of Storage Media Technology Within the Data Centre

Evolution of Storage Media Technology Within the Data Centre AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EVOLUTION OF STORAGE MEDIA TECHNOLOGY WITHIN THE DATA CENTRE TO SUPPORT THE I/O REQUIREMENTS OF MODERN APPLICATIONS. Chandan Chandapura Ramesh (x14111306) Abstract Technology has always played a tremendous role in evolution of data storage media from the very starting punch cards to the present flash drives and from kilobytes to terabytes. The evolution of storage included from the standardization of storage devices i.e from large trunks of kilobytes storage media to very small microchip having the great storage capacity of gigabytes. However, in this paper we will look into evolution of storage devices from magnetic tape, magnetic drum, DRAM, FLOPPYs , CDs, DAT, DDS, MOD, , Micro drive, Multimedia Card SD card, Cloud backup solutions. Finally, in this article about evolution about storage devices, we will look into an assessment providing solutions for tiered storage solutions and its development with reference oracle, netapp tiered storage solutions and storage based on present storage trends. INRODUCTION As the time passed by, along with the time technology too has evolved in every step of life from basic needs to the advanced mode of humanity. Concurrently, the evolution in technology of computers has played a prominent role for humankind. Therefore, as the storage medium has also played a major role in computer architecture. Zetta. (2015) say as the computers evolved the storage mediums too had evolved, it all started from punch cards to present storage mediums like those that flash drives to SSD, companies have started to be relied on cloud backup solutions supported by data centers. As per the need of todays Business strategies the requirement for data storage has increased tremendously compared to past five years and to mitigate the costs over storage of data, it has been segregated and designed as structured, semi-structured and unstructured data and they have been stored. As the data is considered officially as corporate assets, there has always been attacks that are more vulnerable. Therefore, data hardening has been a big challenge but still many third party companies have been working towards its excellence. Few measures which have been considered under the improvisation level are SAN, Fiber channel over Ethernet (Fcoe), Internet protocol, Converged Network Adapter (CNA) etc. The storage network technology in the datacenters has been developed into many different configurations, which are DAS (direct attached storage), NAS (Network attached storage), SAT (Storage area networks). In further section we will look this structures with much more details. BACKGROUND: After looking into all the prospective over the storage media briefly will have a detailed discussion over each storage model and it evolution. Magnetic tape: PCMag digital group. (2015) say it was the first few recording mediums used to record music. The data recorded was actually in sequential format. It was manufactured by a ferromagnetic material the disadvantage of these tapes was they would be contaminated if they were not rolled and packed tightly. The tracks on storage device were running parallel to each other, which is called as parallel recording. In computing magnetic tapes are used to store auxiliary type of information. An excellent example for the computer system, which used magnetic tape, was UNIVAC. It had the capacity to handle 128 characters per inch so they were widely used in computers in earlier days. Magnetic drum: Webopedia. (2015) it was direct access storage device, which was metallic cylinder, which was coated by a material called magnetic-iron-oxide. The tracks recorded on the cylindrical device were stored in channels and it was capable of holding 200 tracks were the drum used to rotate at 3000rpm. But still it had a drawback which is that they were not able to store too much of data. DRAM (dynamic random access memory): it is a medium that is been used store the memory temporarily and it is been used widely in todays computer systems. It is made up of small capacitor and transistors. Dram has many cells and each cell is equal to a Bit. The elements on Dram are organized in rows and columns. Todays computers use these cells in megabyte modules. FLOPPYs: Riaz, Rashid et al (2015) say it is portable computer storage disks were data could be handled easily. They are more fragile, low at cost. It was highly dispensable for the people working on their personnel laptops and other processors. It poses a capacity of 250kb to 1.6 mb so it varies on the size of the disk. CDs, DAT, DDS, MOD, Multimedia Card, Micro drive, SD card were the next generation storage medias. CD-ROM was highly used to save and retrieve the data immensely on the systems. DAT was the digital recording table, which was actually released by the Sony in 1987. The main advantage is the data is recorded digitally rather that in analog style. But when compared to CD the performance of DAT is higher and advanced. Micro drives or so called flash drives are portable storage drives used to transfer small amount data very fast and efficiently and so on still the storage media has always been improvising till the present holographic storage formats and still going on giving out the services. Evolution of technologies in Data center storage services: Until now, we had brief discussion of different storage technologies in common IT infrastructures. SIEMON. (2015) say as the time has passed by evolution of DATA center has taken place in parallel. However, it was much more advanced as the data stored in the data center is considered as the corporate assets. so to store data securely different storage models have been introduced they are SAN, Fiber channel over Ethernet (Fcoe) , internet protocol, converged network adapter (CNA) under doff rent configurations like DAS (direct attached storage), NAS (Network attached storage), Further, in this paper will briefly look into every step of these evolution strategies. SAN (storage area network): [6] it is a high-speed network for the storage devices, which would be connected to the servers. The main advantage of SAN is it provides great assistance in backing up the data and disaster recovery. SAN uses fiber optic cable so that the data transfer rate from one location to different location will be high. Fiber channel over Ethernet (Fcoe): [6] it provides a great solution for the organizations possessing parallel network infrastructure issues. Fiber channel gives a high-speed data transfer protocol serially and standards for enterprise grade storage solutions, the transfer rates can be up to 10gbs. Fiber channels operate at great speeds like 4,16, 32 gb/s , but generally in IEEE 802.3ae standards the distance supported for 10GB Ethernet is 10km. so it is highly privileged in datacenters. Internet protocol:[6] it is group or singular drive which are combined together but they are not part of storage network but considered to be more over the internal storage media on personnel laptops. NAS (network-attached storage): [6] offers high-level storage solutions in file sharing services because the architecture is directly connected to LAN. However, because of these characters in NAS it synchronizes hardware storage resources into network, so it can be used to develop multiple networked services and by doing this storage utilization is very efficient. So based on the above technologies the storage solutions have been improvised but still there many technological labs still working on improvement on the performance, reliability and so on. Storage Media Solutions: In this paper will further discuss and present an assessment on tiered storage media solution on any top two companys depended on any context of the data at any particular time. We will be taking Netapp tiered storage solutions and Oracle tiered storage solutions. Tiered storage solutions: TechTarget (2005) the storage solutions are to segregation of data based on the company-defined policies to reduce the cost effectiveness of the data. The segregation may include different categories like performance, usage, security and so on. [6] Tiered storage consists few different tiers like tier 1, 2 and 3 data. Tier 1 includes highly sensitive data so data isolation is main aspect hence they are stored in expensive media solutions. Tier 2 data will consist of type two classified files so the storage media expense is reduced. In Tier 3 it consists of unclassified data the expenses are very less as the data is stored in in less expensive media. Oracle Tired Storage Solution Service: Oracle optimized solutions (2015) the main aim of oracle tiered solution is to provide highly efficient scalability and flexibility for the data. An always-new data storage trend was needed for better storage efficiency. As the data grows there was an opportunity arising for new wave lengths, Based on this aspects oracle offered optimized tiered solution to protect data as well, lower cost for storage and massive scalability. [3] providing Oracles disk and tape storage systems for better performance than many other storage media Introducing Oracle Storage tek modular tape gives a high throughput at lower cost and Oracle e Hierarchical Storage Manager provides configurable file system view and policy based management and data protection. They predicted that reduced deployment provides additional savings. Reduced data risk due to pretesting, ensured access and data integrity. They provide higher quality of the data availability and integrity. Oracle applies all the tiers for the data s torage solutions based on the client requirements. Oracle’s StorageTek T10000D offers outstanding bit error rate. it predicts that it offers 12.6 times better TCO than EMC isilonn soln. Netapp Tired Storage Solution Service: NetApp (2012) has great views towards the optimizing storage efficiency and performance. The main solution they give is, the right data at the right time at the right cost. Netapp provides a very different and unique way of solution for storing the data with an automated way of approach. The virtual tier provides a real time response to most of the demanding applications, ability to consolidate the data others tiers whenever required, conducting data cloning and SSD technologies. Basically provides reduced power -cooling storage. The developed flash technology in the [2] storage tiers of Netapp has helped in increasing the efficiency of the storage solutions. The key advantage of Netapp services provided for storage infrastructure will be the self-managing data-driven service layer. It helps mitigating the costs based on the performance for the classification of the data. The major feature to help the performance of the workloads would be the Netapp Flash Cache PCI-e-based modules. The workloads are like the file service workloads and OLTP workload etc†¦ Conclusion: In this paper, we initially discussed about the evolution of the storage media as the time it was integrated including the storage architecture. We even took a brief review about two companies’ providing storage services which are oracle tier storage solutions and netapp tier storage solutions. we actually had a view how both the companies mitigate the storage structure difficulties and provide a wide range of solutions for the clients which is a good prospective towards the development. The tiered storage solutions of each different vendors are competitive which indirectly supporting the development of the storage technologies. The tiered storage solutions describes the different levels of the storage entities set-up with different clients based on the value of the data. So we conclude telling that the development of storage solutions has to be much more improvised based on the requirement and developments. Bibliography: 1) Memory information. Alienated People :: essays research papers

The Oxford dictionary defines alienation as; to estrange, isolate, detach, distance, to put a distance, to turn away from another person. Alienation, like a lot of other social attitudes and concepts, can give a wide variety of interests. I have found six main points in The Encyclopedia of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Psychoanalysis that have gotten the most attention and things written about alienation; A) Powerlessness: The feeling, belief, or expectancy that a persons behavior can't control some events whether positive or negative, B) Meaninglessness: The person feels incomprehensive in his/her social life and feels the "absurdity of life", C) Normlessness: High expectancies for, or commitment to socially unapproved ways to achieving a goal, one will go about achieving a goal in a not normally excepted way, D) Cultural Estrangement: person's individual values rejected by society, the image that the alienated value's not being standard to that of the environment around him/her, E) Social Isolation: The individuals low expectancy for inclusion and social exceptance, being lonely and commonly found a member of a minority or physically disabled, F) Self Estrangement: This focuses on the discrepancy or differences between one's ideal self and one's actual self. In the novel, The Metamorphosis, Gregor wakes up one morning as a giant insect and feels out of place. When Gregor sees his father and his attitude to him, Gregor feels alienated in that fact that his father yells and shows his anger and frustration to his son and throws an apple which gets stuck in his slimy backside. His father feels Gregor has not become successful and a failure. He probably also feels that he has let his sister down along with his mother for not being supportive enough as the father was not. Continuing with the same concept of Mr. Samsa not being a good father, Gregor felt alienated again by his mother and sister by not filling in the father role while his father was out or doing whatever. His mom and sister took things out of his room and the only thing left was a picture of a woman who he probably felt was the only thing close to him. His boss surely wasn't and his family was sure not there either. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya gets an incredible toothache and is taken to the dentist who refuses to work on her because of her race.
